Yorkshire Tours

Yorkshire

If you are visiting Scotland, you could combine your holiday with a trip to Yorkshire, renowned for its beautiful landscapes, rolling farmlands, dry-stone walls, heather-covered moors, charming little villages, market towns and vibrant cities.

York, the capital city, is one of England’s most attractive ancient cities.  Its cobbled streets, its winding lanes and its exquisite architecture are dominated by the city’s wonderful Minster.  I am a registered York Minister guide and I would be delighted to take you on your own private tour of this outstanding Cathedral.  It is the largest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe and boasts magnificent stained glass dating back over 800 years.

I can also take you on a tour of the city walls, the finest medieval fortification to survive in Europe.  The city walls incorporate the Norman gates, known as Bars, and also vestiges of Roman defences dating back to the second century.

Worth seeing in the area is Castle Howard, one of Britain’s finest historic houses, built by Sir John Vanburgh at the end of the 17th century for Charles Howard, the 3rd Earl of Carlisle and still lived in by the same family.

If you are a James Herriot fan, then a visit to Thirsk to see the Herriot Museum where Alf Wright, alias James Herriot, ran his veterinary practice, is a must!  Thirsk is also the birthplace of Thomas Lord, the founder of Lord’s Cricket ground in London.

And for those of you who enjoy the countryside, then a drive and perhaps a walk in the Yorkshire Dales will be an experience to remember.
